Career in Unani Medicine(BUMS)- Jobs, Admission, Colleges, Eligibility

“BUMS” (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) is an undergraduate degree program in the field of Unani medicine and surgery. This is one of the ancient medication systems widely practiced in parts of South Asian and the Middle East countries such as Persia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, India, etc. “Hippocrates” is known as the father of Unani medicine. Among the many medication systems followed in India, Unani medicine secures 4th place in the race. This degree covers the medical knowledge and practice of the Unani system. “There are four essential mizaj (temperaments) in Unani medicine namely as hot, cold, moist, and dry. Four more are compounded of these single temperaments—namely, hot and dry, hot and moist, cold and dry, and cold and moist.” Pursuing this degree is quite enough to become a doctor (Hakim) in the Unani medical field. The Central Council of Indian Medicine considers Unani under the traditional medicine systems.

Scopes in BUMS

Since BUMS is a widely practiced medication system in India, hence it opens up a wide opportunity to pursue a career in this field, graduated candidates from this field are eligible to be addressed as a Hakeem (doctor). Demands in this sector are continuously growing because of the major concern of people seeking herbal treatments and value for money. Unani medicine has proven to give effective results and minimal side effects by the use of herbal remedies and natural therapies to cure patients. Usually, graduates in this field are self-employed that gives them a sense of satisfaction and flexibility in their work.

One disadvantage of pursuing Unani medicine is that practitioners from this field can only practice Unani in limited parts of the countries, it has less scope in overseas countries and mostly Unani colleges are in India but if one wants to make their career by staying in India, then it is no less than having an MBBS degree.

Salary Package and Payscale

The estimated Payscale of a fresher range between 3-4 LPA in private health institutions. Although, practitioners owning their clinics earn more based on their experience level and expertise. The more effective the treatment, the more patients seek the treatment, hence the remuneration received. The average salary earned by an hakim is 7-8 LPA. However, salary is based on the designated job profile.
